PROJECT: SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL
LIGHTING DESIGN: LAPD
MANUFACTURER: IGUZZINI
For the 'Switched on London' festival LAPD has developed a scheme that takes candle light as its inspiration to add a theatrical element to the lighting of Southwark Cathedral by applying different colours to the various layers. The new Millennium building will be lit with blue, the nave with orange and the central tower with red light. Particular intensity will be given to the architecture of the tower and the spires as they are the most prominent elements that can be seen from many vantage points, including the River Thames.
Despite the size of the Cathedral the design has been achieved with a minimal number of new fittings. LAPD will use existing luminaires and by applying coloured gels and changing lamps will add drama to the night environment within an energy efficient framework.
